We started shooting too late, but dusk is my favorite time of day. Everything gets softer, more muted. There is a sleepy tension and reminder of how little time there ever is. I have the urge to curl up and let the night cover me, but then an unease. My ancient brain won’t let me forget that things hunt at night.

I’ve known Spruse since about middle school, and in that time I’d say that the two of us have experienced one another in difficult moments, but also great growth and change. Not only have I witnessed Spruse’s absolutely boss-lady blossoming into the amazing woman she is today, but I have seen change in the form of peace and joy encompassed her being. I attribute a great deal of that shift to Sami. If CBD oil were a human, I kind of feel like that would be Sami; she is incredibly laid-back and radiates a calm and generous energy.

The spirit world and photography have a pretty natural affection for one another. There’s an entire chapter of the history of photography devoted to spirit portraits, aura photography, and oodles more. We can’t help our fascination with those who aren’t with us physically. Working with cinemagraphs provides a pretty easy and contemporary avenue to create something that can play with our understanding of reality. Whether it be something as simple as a gentle wave in an otherwise static image, or something as elaborate as a disappearing form, I love the theatrical element of elevating otherwise predictable segments of time.

Casey + Rob: My 10 Favorite Photos
My little sister Casey and her boyfriend Rob joined me for a frigid chilly, but beautiful, morning on the family farm for some portraits. I’m pretty sure none of us could feel our extremities, so it was amazing that their goofy personalities still came through in these photos. It was honestly a struggle narrowing it down to 10 favorite, but I did it, and I’m sharing them with you on this fine, way-less-frozen Monday.

I want to thank you for continuing to stick with me as this blog develops. In all honesty, this took a little longer to get out than I would have liked. It’s okay though; part of taking on this responsibility is allowing myself to go at my own pace. I’m still finding my blog legs, if that’s a thing. It’s probably not. You may know me well or not at all, so I wanted to take just a little bit of time to overshare.

As the new year rolls in, I will be directing my focus to providing more timely content for clients and site visitors. Blogs are a new realm for me, so there will be a lot of learning and tweaking as I go.
I’m a large advocate of “pictures worth a 1000 words,” so I won’t feel compelled to write long, poetic descriptions of the images or the events. These posts will be intended to give all of you a deeper glimpse into the events and sessions while allowing the images to mostly speak for themselves. I aim to keep the more magical and more intimate details of my clients’ experiences between them, and hope you can appreciate that as well.
